About Us

The Beth Israel Medical Center of New York is part of Continuum Health Partners, a group of 5 large urban hospitals in New York City. The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Beth Israel has been using and teaching clinician performed ultrasound in the Medical Intensive Care Unit since the early 90's, an initiative pioneered by Dr. Paul Mayo that is continually growing.

We have several expert ultrasonographers on staff here in the Division, including an intensivist who successfully completed the National Board of Echocardiography Certification Exam. Our 9 fellows receive regular training in the application of GCCUS and all achieve high skill level during their Fellowship. Many of the Fellows and Attendings regularly serve as faculty for the National Courses on Critical Care Ultrasonography given by the American College of Chest Physicians and continuously promote the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis and management of critical illness.

We have 6 ultrasound machines of varying ages and strengths, from our 20 year old HP Sonos 1000, our twin Hewlett Packard Cypress machines bought in the late 90's, our massive Siemens Sequoia 256 for major echocardiography work, a donated/loaner Sonosite Titan for vascular access procedures (donated/loaned by our Neuro-Critical Care Attending Dr. Irene Boniece) and finally our everyday, multi-use Sonosite M-Turbo.
